Kakanin or glutinous rice cakes have long been embedded in the Filipino culture. It usually uses glutinous rice and coconut milk on most instances, but a lot of regional kakanin vary in ingredients and have their own take on the traditional Filipino meryenda.

Some restaurants and food brands have even reinvented the kakanin and put their own little twists to it. Here are unique kakanin desserts all adventurous foodies need to try.

Bibingka Cheesecake — Max’s Restaurant

Bibingka has always been a Filipino favorite especially during the holiday season. What if you could serve bibingka cheesecake this noche buena? It’s possible with Max’s Restaurant’s bibingka cheesecake, made out of chiffon, cream cheese, and salted egg bits.

Fried Suman with Mangoes — Sentro 1771

The traditional sumang malagkit is usually served boiled, but Sentro 1771 has decided to take it to the next level by frying them. Eat it with a slice of fresh mango and you’re good to go!

Iday — Crisostomo

Have you ever had sumang malagkit dipped in Batangas chocolate? Crisostomo serves them on these cute, little glasses! Each piece of suman or Iday are attached to these palm leaf sticks for easy dipping and eating.

Bibingka de Leche — Manam

Put a twist to your favorite Christmas kakanin with Manam’s Bibingka de Leche! The bibingka has been topped with a huge serving of creamy leche flan, sprinkled with niyog and salted egg bits. Like all our other Manam faves, this one comes in three sizes small for yourself, medium to share with someone, and large for the whole family and barkada!

Sapin Sapin Leche Flan Torte — Sebastian’s Ice Cream

Sebastian’s brings sapin sapin to new heights as it launched its torte version last August. The crust is made out of crunchy latik cookie, followed by sumptuous layers of real ube halaya and jackfruit. On one pf the layers is kutsinta ice cream, which uses blended malagkit rice and pandan. The top-most part, the leche flan, is made out coconut cream instead of condensed milk to highlight the cake’s kakanin roots.

You may also want to check out their original Pinoy ice cream flavors like mangga’t suman and champorado and dilis.

Available for: Pickup, delivery and takeout. Pick-ups are from Monday to Sunday, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Batangas’ Pinoy Fondue — Pamana

With so many kakanin options to choose from, sometimes you just want to get a little bit of everything, you know? Good thing Pamana has what they call a Batangas’ Pinoy Fondue, which consists of three kakanins in one serving. Grab a stick or fork, choose from bite-sized pieces of puto, suman, or kutsinta, and dip it in hot chocolate.

Maja Blanca Cheesecake — Ted’s Kitchen

We love maja blanca for its creamy, coconutty flavor paired with its gelatinous texture, and we’re pretty sure we’ll love it even more in it’s cheesecake form! It’s one of Ted’s bestselling cakes from their kakanin series, and it’s best consumed with a cup of Kapeng Laguna.

Puto Bumbong with Buko Jelly and Toasted Coconut — Neil’s Kitchen

Level up your puto bumbong snack with Neil’s Kitchen! The purple rice cake has been topped with a block of soft buko jelly and brown toasted coconut. That’s three layers of Christmas goodness!

Available for: Limited dine-in, pick-up, takeout, and delivery via LalaMove or Grab Express. They are open Friday to Sunday for dine in from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Pandan Pichi Pichi – Victorino’s Restaurant

How would you like to have a combination of cassava, fresh buko, pandan, and TONS of grated cheese? Sounds like our typical Pinoy merienda, made more special! Nilupak with Sea Urchin — Toyo Eatery

Nilupak is any starchy ingredient (like cassava, sweet potato, or ube) mashed and mixed together with sugar and gata (coconut milk). Toyo Eatery’s take on this Filipino classic includes mashed sweet potato, sea urchin, nata de coco, dalandan, and grated cashew nuts enclosed in a cassava crisp. It’s topped with an edible blue ternate petal for an earthy finish.

Poison Coffee & Doughnuts launched an all-kakanin doughnut collection last August to celebrate Buwan ng Wika. They have three unique kakanin flavors: mangga’t suman, maja blanca, and macapuno, all in doughnut form!
