They’re just downright a thing of comfort.
If there’s anything the Japanese have mastered, it’s definitely the art of food. They seem to have a knack for reimagining your favorite classics, turning them into their own, and taking them to a whole new level.

Enter sandos. If you’ve ever been to Japan, you’ve probably already come across these babies at konbinis (convenience stores), bakeries, or room-service menus at hotels. They’re basically Japanese-style sandwiches but picture this: your choice of filling sandwiched in between soft pillowy shokupan also known as Japanese milk bread. Are you drooling yet?
Now, you don’t have to fly all the way to Japan just to get a taste of these perfect on-the-go snacks. We’ve got that area covered. Here’s where you can find them in Manila:
Tamago Sando
Tamago Sando which literally translates to egg sandwich is the Japanese’ version of an egg salad sandwich. The Makati-based brand’s take on the original tamago sando has a creamy filling and a perfectly cooked egg that is bursting with a rich yolk flavor. They’ve also got the tamagoyaki sando which consists of a rolled egg omelette that will automatically transport you to Tokyo.
Mister Sando
Mister Sando has got quite an extensive menu of different sando fillings. They’ve got the classic Tamago, Tuna, Karaage, Kimukatsu, Cheese Kimukatsu, and Ebi. And if you can’t commit to one flavor, they’re offering samplers that allow you to get a taste of a bit of everything.
Panko Pussy
Panko Pussy is 12/10’s daytime food delivery service that specializes in all things sando and anything pan. They’ve got 3 offerings: The Gyutan Philly, a slow-cooked beef tongue sandwich with onion, green pepper, provolone, and wasabi in toasted milk bread, The Spicy Tuna, a raw tuna, kyuri, and negi sandwich dressed in Panko’s spicy sauce and sandwiched between butter-fried sourdough rye, and lastly The Katsu Sando, a wagyu & pork menchi katsu sandwich with cabbage, pickled kyuri, cheddar, tare, and yuzu kosho in toasted milk bread.
Claudine’s Sweet Selections
Sandos are not just exclusive to savory flavors. In fact, fruit sandos are also popular among the Japanese and are often served as a dessert. Claudine’s Sweet Selections specializes in mixed fruit sandos filled with fresh fruits and whipped cream.
