You probably knead this.

You ever have that moment where you’re so excited over a recipe then suddenly stop in the middle of prepping… noticing that you’re lacking an ingredient or two?

Nowadays, it’s not exactly convenient nor safe to just go out for a quick run to the grocery so we’ve decided to come up with a list of common ingredients with their corresponding substitutes! Check them out below.

Heavy Cream

You can easily substitute 1 cup heavy cream with 2/3 cup whole milk + 75 g of unsalted better, melt the butter first and then mix with the milk.

Baking Powder

For every 1 tsp of baking powder, you can replace it with 1/4 tsp baking soda + 5/8 tsp cream of tartar.

Bread Crumbs

If you have cornflakes or oats then you can use either to replace bread crumbs, just retain the original measurement. If you’re going to use cornflakes, make sure to crush them first.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is just one of those ingredients where it’s not advisable to use a replacement as it can greatly affect consistency and taste but if you’re on your last resort, for every 1/2 tsp baking soda needed, you can try replacing it with 2 tsp double-acting baking powder. You should also note that you have to replace all the acidic liquids in your recipe with its non-acidic equivalent.

Buttermilk

You can replace 1 cup buttermilk with 1 tbsp lemon juice or vinegar + 1 cup milk, combine and let stand for around 5-10 minutes.

Cornstarch

You can switch 1 tbsp or 15 g cornstarch with 2 tbsp or 25 g of all purpose flour.

Cream of Tartar

For every 1/2 tsp cream of tartar, you can substitute it with 1/2 tsp white vinegar or lemon juice.

Vanilla Bean

Vanilla bean can be hard to come by lately but you can easily substitute 1 bean with 2-3 tsp of pure vanilla extract.

All Purpose Flour

You can use cake flour instead but keep in mind that for every 130 g of all purpose flour, you’ll need 110 g + 2 tbsp of sifted cake flour.

Cake Flour

If you have all purpose flour on hand, just replace 120 g of cake flour with 100 g all purpose flour + 2 tbsp cornstarch.
