There are so many things you have to know before committing to a new hair color. There are expectations that need to be let go, color maintenance that needs to be done, and certain activities that have to be avoided. So, here’s a little fact sheet on what you need to know about hair coloring.<\/p>\n

1. Color outcome depends on hair quality and color<\/h2>\n

What you see on the samples may not necessarily be the color that shows up when you get it done, especially if it’s a light color and you opt out of bleaching your hair. Healthy hair absorb pigments better<\/strong>, so make sure your hair is smooth and all dead ends are trimmed so the color goes even throughout.<\/p>\n

2. You might have to get your hair bleached<\/h2>\n

Depending on the color you choose, usually going lighter means needing to get your hair bleached<\/strong> in order to get the desired shade perfectly. Sometimes, bleaching has to be done multiple times, depending on how vibrant or light the chosen color needs to be. Warning: Bleaching can feel painful especially if you have a sensitive scalp or wounds from scratching.<\/p>\n

3. Maintenance is a must<\/h2>\n

Since hair grows, roots have to be done every 2 months<\/strong>. Fading occurs over time even though you get a permanent dye, so get a gloss or cellophane treatment once in a while<\/strong> to restore some color to your tresses and make them look healthier. Also, use a shampoo and conditioner that’s formulated for color-treated hair to keep its vibrancy.<\/p>\n

4. Some colors need more upkeep<\/h2>\n

Red is hardest color to care for<\/strong> because the pigment doesn’t adhere very well to the strands and is very heat and photo reactive. Blonde is the second hardest color to maintain<\/strong> as you need to constantly combat brassiness. Brown shades are low-maintenance<\/strong>, so it’s something you should consider if you can’t commit to the upkeep.<\/p>\n

5. Avoid water and the sun<\/h2>\n

Staying under the sun can dry the hair and turn it into a brassy shade. Chlorinated pool water can oxidize the dye and make it an unsightly shade of green. And high heat styling ’cause it can alter the color of your hair. Protect your hair like you would your face: wear a hat to shade it from the harsh rays of the sun and use a heat and UV spray<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

6. Deep condition your hair<\/h2>\n

Getting any reconstructing or coloring procedure done dries and damages the hair to an extent. Do a weekly at-home deep conditioning<\/strong> with grocery-bought hair masks or DIY it yourself with just coconut oil. There are a lot of chemicals you’ll get into contact with when you dye your hair and your skin might not love it. Ask to get a patch test done first to see if there won’t be any adverse reactions that will result from the dyeing process.<\/p>\n

Ombre<\/strong> is a low-maintenance style where the darkest color is at the roots and it gradually lightens toward the ends. Sombre<\/strong> is similar to ombre, but uses subtler shades.<\/p>\n
Balayage<\/strong> combines ombre and highlights, where the stylist paints on the surface of the hair and creates a gradient.<\/p>\n
9. Try not to DIY<\/h2>\n

DIY-ing saves you money, but if you’re coloring your hair for the first time, better leave it to the pros. Boxed dye contains more harmful ingredients compared to the dyes that salons use<\/strong>. So save yourself from the hair damage and go in for a consultation\u2014it’s free!<\/p>\n
