If you’ve ever wondered how booze and a particular Saint Patrick ever became synonymous, then today is the day you find out how it came to be.
St. Patrick’s Day is a commemoration of the arrival of Christianity to Ireland led by Saint Patrick, as well as celebrating the heritage and culture of the Irish in general. It’s been written that he was abducted by Irish raiders at 16 for 6 years, and it was during this time that he ‘found God’. He later on escaped and began to convert pagan Irish to Christianity. March 17, his feast day, also marks his death anniversary.
Saint Patrick’s Day was made an official Christian feast day in the early 17th century. Celebrations generally involve public parades and festivals, the wearing of green attire or shamrocks, a three-leafed plant that was used by Saint Patrick to explain the Holy Trinity to the pagan Irish (and no, it’s not the same as the four-leaf clover we have associated it to). But most importantly, Lenten restrictions on eating and drinking alcohol are lifted for the day, which has encouraged and propagated the holiday’s tradition of alcohol consumption.
YEP, you read that right. A free pass!
