Taco Joe’s Food Shack is a taco bar along Katipunan hellbent on showing you a good time. From good food, great music, a quaint and artsy space full of grit, and tequila to top off the night. Reminiscent of the old Tia Maria’s Cantina (shoutout to the Katipunan of the early 2000s), this neighborhood Mexican joint strikes back.
You know you’ve found the place to be when students swarm to blow off steam, and what’s more: it’s not only students from the neighboring universities – rivalry is thrown out the window, as the some regulars hail all the way from Taft Ave.
The store’s dim lights set the mood from the get-go, with red Edison light bulbs casting a layer of neon shadows on its iconic Chihuahua painting. Street artist Miggy Antonio’s murals of distorted monsters deck the walls, confining the small space just big enough for a lot of dancing – which is what happens more than you’d think.
Mexican was the owner’s choice of cuisine because it fit the bill of refreshing mojitos and sangria cocktails, to absolutely no one’s dismay. Students and regulars have been quick to familiarize themselves with their Tequila Thursdays and Fridays – most of the time served by Joe himself.
Fun fact: The name was conceived as straightforward as can be: the owner's name is Joe, and he sells tacos.
Serving Mexican staples like tacos, quesadillas, and cocktails, they give the people what they want with Macho Nachos, Sisig tacos, and other crowd favorites.
