Sushi me rollin’, they hatin’

Who knew sushi was so versatile? This year we saw a number of versions of the Japanese dish from tacos, pizzas, burritos, donuts, and bowls. The trend of reinventing sushi swept major foodie cities all over the world and one of these was Metro Manila!

In this list, we look back at all the restaurants in the Metro that served the most interesting iterations of sushi. Keep reading to see who joined the craze.

Sushi Taco

Ooma – multiple branches

Ooma is a modern Japanese restaurant which promises bold Japanese flavors at affordable prices. The concept is the brain child of the Moment Group and young acclaimed chef Bruce Ricketts, the same partnership that brought us Mecha Uma. One of their popular creations is the taco maki – an open-faced temaki wrap with a sheet of nori acting as the taco shell. Their soft-shell crab taco maki is a must-try; it’s topped with crispy soft-shell crab, aligue mayo and ebiko!

Torch – multiple branches

At Torch, seaweed is shaped into a taco shell and is battered and fried until crisp before being stuffed with Japanese rice and an assortment of toppings. The invention is called a Noritaco.  There are currently eight kinds to choose from, we recommend the Kumo (soft shell crab, spicy mango, alfalfa, and tobiko) or Kabuki (salmon, cream cheese, bonito, unagi mayo, and furikake); for the more adventurous, try the Chuka Iidako noritaco which is topped with spicy baby octopus, goma, cucumber, and spring onion.

Sushi Pizza

JiPan – multiple branches

Jipan Cafe and Bakeshop has been offering authentic Japanese cuisine since in 1992. They offer assorted breads and a wide selection of sweet and savory pastries.

Koku – Salcedo

From the creators of Meat Plus in Subic, as well as Kettle and Fireside, comes a new Japanese fusion restaurant serving specialties like sushi pizza, Japanese carbonara, salmon belly skewers, oyster papaya and more.

Sushi Burrito

Nori – Kapitolyo

In 2017, sushi burritos took San Francisco, New York, Chicago, and Singapore by storm. Ta Ke Ho Me – multiple branches

Ta Ke Ho Me stand is a take-out concept that prides itself in serving affordable yet quality sushi rolls. Their version of the sushirito is delicious, fresh, healthy, filling and easy to eat. It also comes in 3 flavors: vegetarian, tuna and salmon.

Sushi Donut

Shinsen Sushi Bar and Restaurant – Sapphire Bloc

Shinsen – “fresh” in Japanese – is a homegrown sushi bar that now has two branches around Pasig. While it is known for its fresh sushi selections, oysters and teppanyaki, which you can read about here, what’s more interesting are their Sushi Dōnatsu. Each one is named after a region in Japan and is priced at a flat Php 278 – not bad considering that one sushi donut is about as big as four regular sushi rolls!

GoSushi – Mindanao Ave

GoSushi serves affordable Japanese fusion dishes but they are most notable for being one of the first in Metro Manila to offer sushi donuts!  Currently, they are offering six amazing flavors (priced between Php 219-289) for you to choose from: California Maki, Philly Cheese Steaks, Black Sesame Salmon, California Torch, Philadelphia, and Smoked Salmon.

Sushi Nori – multiple branches

Sushi Nori is the first temakeria in the country that offers grab-and-go sushi. Try 26 different flavors to be made into a hand-rolled temaki or a 6-pc sushi rolls set. They also serve salads and sushi bowls.
