There’s a new noodle in town.

We live in a ramen world and udon is getting thrown under the bus. What’s so great about ramen? Hm? Udon is just as tasty as ramen. Udon is just as Japanese as ramen. People totally like udon just as much as they like ramen. And when did it become okay for one noodle to be the favorite of everybody, huh? Because that’s not what noodles are about. We should totally just *stab* ramen!

Enter Marugame Udon. The Philippines’ latest international franchise turned its burners on in Bonifacio High Street last August and people are lining up for a slurp at this popular udon joint from Japan (known there as Marugame Seimen).

Following suit with innovative Japanese franchises like Yayoi, Marugame Udon isn’t the usual order-off-the-menu restaurant. You start off with a tray and pick your udon, customizing the serving size and the how hot you want it.

Next, slide your tray over to the tempura and side selection. You can mix and match the tempura to go with your udon. Fried eggs, vegetable tempura, chicken karaage are just the tip of the sides you can choose from. Don’t go crazy though! They charge per piece for the sides.

Once you’ve chosen your udon set and paid for your meal, you can load up on the garnishes and condiments which include wasabi, ginger, tenkasu, spring onions, sesame seeds, togarashi, sauces and more.

If you don’t trust yourself to decide what combination to get, Marugame has classic udon bowls like Kake Udon, Beef Ontama Bukkake Udon (photo below), and Curry Udon on offer as well. But if you’re feeling adventurous, they have some more experimental flavors as well like Carbonara Udon and Chicken Papaitan Udon (photo below).

If udon is not your thing, Marugame also has classic rice bowls like Curry Rice, Gyudon Rice.
