Paradise Dynasty
There is no shortage of dishes on offer at Paradise Dynasty, but your experience just wouldn’t be complete without ordering a basket (or two) of their signature xiao long bao. Their version of the soup dumpling comes in a number of intriguing colours and flavours, including a redhot Sichuan bao, a lush foie gras bao, a decadent black truffle bao, and a surprisingly delicious and stringy three-cheese mix.

Kam’s Roast Goose
Kam’s is a popular Cantonese restaurant whose succulent roast specialities earned them a Michelin star just four months after opening. Fair warning – you’ll have to brave long lines to get a taste of their signature roast goose and char siew (BBQ pork).

Yat Lok Barbecue Restaurant
If there’s one establishment that can give Kam’s a run for its money, it’s Yat Lok. The place is basic and the space limited but the straightforward and delicious food is what makes this place a Hong Kong institution. The roast pork (better known to us as Lechon Macau) and char siew are unbelievably tender and melt-in-your-mouth. Their goose is fatty and juicy all the while retaining its crispy skin!

Meats

Mak’s Noodle
Wonton noodle soup might be one of the most ubiquitous dishes in Hong Kong but there seems to be a world of difference between Mak’s and any other joint that sells the stuff. We reckon the secret is in their plump wontons which are practically bursting with perfectly seasoned and tender shrimp. They’re typically served in small, overstuffed bowls full of the umami-rich soup and thin noodles.

22 Ships
At one point, your tastebuds are going to crave for something other than Chinese food. 22 Ships is a must-try for its elevated tapas & sangria. The space is incredibly cool with its subway tiles, open kitchen, and wraparound bar. Portions here are small but the flavors spot-on; every dish is exciting, innovative, and downright delicious.

Little Bao
Little Bao is by far one of the hottest spots in Central. The modern Chinese diner is a Sheung Wan icon thanks to its mascot (a funny-looking Tweety Bird and baby Buddha hybrid), but what really put them on the map is their delicious food. The ever-trendy eatery is always packed thanks to their baos… and booze! The beer selection is great and the cocktails punchy and perfectly garnished.

Yardbird
Canadian head chef Matt Abergel (formerly of Masa in New York and Zuma in HK) takes a beak to tail approach in the kitchen of this modern yakitori restaurant, skewering every part of the chicken from neck to tail. Throw in great cocktails and excellent beers, hip (read: hot) young staff and loud music and it’s no surprise that Yardbird has been a smash hit with Hong Kong’s in-crowd since day one. They recently moved from Bridges Street to Wing Lok Street but the number of diners they are able to draw to their effortlessly cool, urban space has not diminished.

New Punjab Club
New Punjab Club harkens to the liberated era of post-Colonial Pakistan and India, saluting the regal yet flamboyant attitude of the time. The result is “a boisterous tandoor grill house” in a sophisticated setting. The newly-opened restaurant serves authentic Punjabi cuisine care of Michelin-starred chef Palash Mitra formerly of Gymkhana in London.

11 Westside
Hong Kong finally has a joint for legit street style tacos at 11 Westside. The restaurant is spearheaded by Chef Esdras Ochoa of the lauded Sonoran Mexican restaurant in L.A., Salazar. 11 Westside’s Guacamole, which comes with house-made tortilla chips, is a showstopper; it’s served in a mortar and pestle and mashed tableside. The cocktails alone are worth visiting for, thanks to beverage director Daniel Eun, a man with experience at some of America’s best bars, including New York speakeasy PDT.

Ho Lee Fook
With a name like Ho Lee Fook, you ought to have an idea of what’s in store. The funky Chinese kitchen is helmed by Chef Jowett Yu whose interpretation of Chinese food has made Ho Lee Fook a go-to for foodies in search of inventive new approaches to Chinese flavors. It also helps that the place is uber cool and “instagrammable” with its mahjjong tiling and wall of gold-plated cats raising their right paws as though in welcome. Their signature dish is the Roasted Wagyu Short Ribs with jalapeno puree, green shallot kimchi and soy glaze – a must-try!

RŌNIN
RŌNIN is an izakaya-style dining bar with a focus on fish, seafood, and Japanese spirits. Oddies Gelateria
Journeying to Gough Street involves climbing up some steep flights of stairs but it’s worth for Oddies. Known for their incredibly thick artisan gelato, parfait creations, and fusion eggettes, this place is sure to satisfy your sweet tooth – it’s a great place for kids and kids-at-heart. Try their best-selling flavor, Dark Matter, made with 80% dark chocolate gelato with flecks of chocolate and fudgy brownies. Another standout is Interstellar with its interesting combination of mango gelato, black pepper, strawberry balsamic coulis, salted cashew nuts and shortbread pieces. Don’t miss out on their signature eggette parfaits! The Night Wolf is described as “Italian low fat soft gelato twisted with 66% dark chocolate served with buttery crumbles, caramelised banana ice cream, passion fruit panna cotta, brownie and chocolate chips eggettes and crunchy flakes.” Intense!
