People in the US are obsessed over this healthy fast food trend, and we found 10 places in Manila that serve them.
Poké /pou’kei/, which means “to slice or cut”, is a popular Hawaiian appetizer made from raw fish (usually salmon or ahi tuna), vegetables, and rice. You can go crazy with additional toppings like edamame, avocados, and tobiko (fish roe), then top it off with some soy sauce to taste. Basically it’s from Hawaii and it’s sushi bowls on steroids.
Poké is considered a go-to comfort food and no gathering is considered complete without it. Da Poke Shack is one of the most known places to get authentic Poké in Hawaii; it was even named #1 on Yelp’s Top 100 Places to Eat in the US for 2014. A bowl can cost between $8 to $13 (approx. P360 to P585) depending on current seafood market prices.
The Poké craze has crossed seas and reached Northern America. Popular restaurants/vendors include Poké to the Max food truck by Sam Choy in Bellevue, Washington, The Fish King in Glendale, Los Angeles; and the Seasalt Fish Grill in Santa Monica, Los Angeles.
As promised, here are 10 restaurants in Manila and their individually unique take on the Poké.
