Australian culture is something we are more or less familiar with. Thanks to things like geography and certain talking seagulls, we know that it’s called the “land down under” and that they call each other “mayt.”
But aside from the Sydney opera house, kangaroos, and surfing, there’s one aspect to Australia that remains a mystery. And that’s their food. What is Australian cuisine anyway? Let’s take a look at what they call their traditional Australian food.
Barbecued meat
The phrase, “Put another shrimp on the barbie” isn’t as ridiculous as it sounds. In the land down under, barbie means barbecue. And they put absolutely everything on the barbie. Beef, pork, sausages, seafood, and anything else you can imagine, with onions on the side.
Burgers with “the lot”
The hamburger: an iconic sandwich you can find anywhere in the world. Meat, tomatoes, lettuce, onions, with a layer of your choice of sauce. What makes an Australian burger different from the rest? “The Lot” a.k.a. pineapples, pickled beetroot, and egg.
Vegemite on Toast
Vegemite, one of the world’s biggest mysteries. An Australian delight, Vegemite is a savory spread made from yeast extract, spices, and vegetables. It’s vegan, kosher, and halal, making it the universal snack all stomachs can taste. Weird flex, but ok. It belongs in between two slices of bread with butter.
But what does Vegemite taste like? Jury's still out on this until you get a taste yourself, but our sources say it's salty, bitter, and really meaty, with an aftertaste like beer!
Tim Tams
It seems like we’d be doing Tim Tams an injustice by reducing it to chocolate biscuits, so let’s just call it what it is: a pack of malted miracles, hugging a cream filling, and drenched in more chocolate that has taken the world by storm. And yes, we have Australia to thank for that.
Fun fact: The Tim Tam Slam is an actual thing. This involves biting two opposite corners of the Tim Tam, dunking it in your coffee or milk, and using it as a straw.
Meat Pies
Like burgers, the pie isn’t a dish foreign to us. Every corner of the globe has their own version, whether it’s sweet or savory. Australian’s got their own: hand-sized pies with mincemeat and gravy for the filling, topped with tomato sauce.
