With the rise of our own coffee culture, Manila has turned into a caffeine-mad city. Everyone’s got their own favorite cup, be it from a neighboring coffee giant like Starbucks or a slowly served pour-over from a local roastery.

In the heart of Old Balara in Quezon City lays a gem for coffee lovers. Fika, a casual dining place serving all-day coffee and Filipino comfort food, has become a place of respite for busy northerners because of the restaurant’s relaxing ambiance.

Contrary to its Filipino-centric menu, the name of the restaurant is Swedish that means “coffee break”. In Swedish culture, to have coffee is to accompany it with pastries or sandwiches–kind of like the English tradition of high tea. But why the Swedish name for a coffee house that serves local cuisine? It’s because chef and owner Mats Loo is from Sweden himself.

Insider tip: Chef Mats Loo teaches at the First Gourmet Academy. Don’t be surprised by the young staff! He also hires students from the school to do their internship at the restaurant.

The place emanates a casual and laidback hotel lobby feel–great for solo workers looking for a quiet corner or long afternoon meetings.

Fika serves Filipino and international breakfast as early as 7AM. The customer favorite is the Pork Tocino with Garlic Rice, Fried Eggs, and Homemade Atchara. During the ‘ber months, though, there is a rise in orders for the Champorado with Dried Fish and the Arroz Caldo.

If rice isn’t your thing , try their 2-piece Pancake/Waffle served with Whipped Cream and Homemade Orange Syrup or Omelettes, for those who want a good fill of eggs in the morning.

Insider tip: Breakfast is served from 7-11AM.
