Don’t be a drag just be a queen!

Just a few years after opening up shop, Butterboy Bakehouse has made a name for themselves mainly because of two things–their perfectly baked, affordable-yet-delicious croissants and being a loud-and-proud LGBTQ+ owned establishment.

Butterboy Bakehouse, owned by Hilder Demetrio and Jayson So, offers more than just delectable laminated pastries and delicious coffee–it stands as a safe space where LGBTQ+ individuals can come together and feel supported.

As a safe space, Butterboy Bakehouse transforms their humble cafe every week to a stage–a stage that brings spotlight to the magnificent, fierce, and jaw-dropping talent of drag queens— for Butterboy’s Drag Brunch!

Meet the Drag Queens of Butterboy’s Drag Brunch

Butterboy Bakehouse may not be a big venue, but a great advantage to their space is a more intimate experience of the show. The energy from the exuberant crowd is easily infectious, the loud music and cheering gets your heart pumping, and the close-up performance from the drag queens makes you feel like a part of the show.

Every week features a unique theme and a different set of performers here at Butterboy. For this Pride month’s Drag Brunch, we had the pleasure of watching Andy Crocker, Pura Luka Vega, O-A, and Maxie Andreison.

The show started off with a performance from each drag queen which was then followed by a Chikahan session that allowed the audience to interact with the queens.

For their performances, Andy Crocker opened with Ruffa Mae’s “Booba”, garnering excited woots and laughter from the audience. Then it was followed by a moving interpretation of Sara Bareilles’s “She Used to Be Mine” by Pura Luka Vega, complete in their waitress costume and dazzling make-up.

Then, O-A comes to the stage, in her stunning blonde hair and leotards, singing to Dua Lupa’s “Electricty” while handing out electricity bills from Meralco. And finally, Maxie Andreison rocked the house with their version of The Cranberries’ “Zombie”.

For their second performance, Pura Luka Vega gave a modern and queer version of The Bangles’ “Eternal Flame”, circling the bakehouse with electric candles on each hand. Maxie Andreison moved the audience next, serenading with Hale’s “The Day You Said Goodnight” and making the crowd sing along.

And then, O-A re-enters the stage, cloaked as the majestic Little Mermaid and singing to “Part of Your World”. But of course, who is Little Mermaid without her Ursula? Cue in Andy Crocker in their spectacular hair and tentacles, filling the room with the song, “Poor Unfortunate Soul”.

Everything We Ate at Butterboy’s Drag Brunch

The Butterboy Drag Brunch experience isn’t complete without having a taste of their specialty pastry and dishes! For our brunch, we tried the Butterboy Breakfast of the Champions and the French Toast with Seasonal Fruits.

Butterboy Breakfast of the Champions featured Butterboy’s classic butter croissant along with a savory fennel sausage, roasted tomatoes, scrambled eggs, and refried beans.

The French Toast catered to those who had a sweet tooth, with the dish including French Toast made from Butterboy’s classic butter croissant, cream cheese pastry cream, fresh strawberries, and caramelized bananas.

We couldn’t miss the opportunity to try out the Butterboy Pride Box, too! This year, they have three queer-coded flavors–the Berry Gay and Berry Proud Croissant, the Baklava? Kouign Amann, and the Hotdog Roll!

The Berry Gay and Berry Proud Croissant was baked to perfection, with luscious raspberry and blueberry filling and pastry cream.

The Hotdog Roll is for those who want a savory pastry. This treat includes a classic hotdog, some mustard for that special kick, and toppings of white sesame seeds!

The Baklava? Kouign Amann was a unique yet delicious take. It’s rolled with pistachio paste and glazed with rose syrup. On top, you’ll find bits of pistachio nuts and dried rose petals!
