13 Ubay St. Comfort Dining – Sta. Mesa Heights

Despite housing a brewery, owner Zaza insists 13 Ubay is all about promoting wholesome family values. It’s the kind of place where you’d celebrate an intimate moment like a birthday, an anniversary, and other milestones.

The lot where 13 Ubay now stands once belonged to chef Zaza’s grandparents. Before she decided to pursue culinary studies, she seldom stepped foot in the kitchen as this was considered the domain of her lola, titas, and mother. Eventually the family home was converted into the site for the family business, a printing press.

Years later, the printing press was relocated but the matriarch was adamant that the house stay in the family. By this time Zaza had returned from her stint in Singapore, working in kitchens while specializing in Mediterranean cuisine. The house was a reminder of the importance of staying close to one’s roots and so she turned it into a Filipino restaurant!

Look around and you’ll notice that the entire space is a homage to their family’s history and a celebration of the Filipino tradition of sharing a meal with loved ones.

Fun Fact: The photos on the walls were captured by Zaza's grandfather and the masks were acquired from their family travels!

BONUS: Elias Wicked Ales and Spirits

Elias Wicked Ales and Spirits is part of the experience at 13 Ubay. The brewery specializes in craft beers, craft spirits, and hard cider. They extract their brews from Filipino fruits and mixes — guyabano and mango cider are the most popular. Elias is not there to get you drunk, rather, it is there to encourage you to pair craft beer with your food.

With families moving further away from each other, 13 Ubay places special importance on being the kind of place where families will gather — even if it’s just once in a blue moon.
